RTX 5090 GPU Pricing Chaos Sparks Backlash Across Global Markets | Image Source: videocardz.com
BERLIN, Germany, 23 March 2025 – A new chapter of the GeForce saga of Nvidia RTX 5090 has been developed, and is not exactly a pleasure of the crowd. Among the availability of exotic stocks, the high prices in the sky, and now the coating of B-stock models with missing rendering production units, it is not surprising that consumers hesitate. According to Alternative, an important German retailer, a ZOTAC RTX 5090 SOLID OC model appeared at 2,899 euros, the same price as a fully functional RTX 5090, except that this version quietly lacks eight ROPs. And it’s just a layer of a complex situation by looking at players, retailers and industry analysts.
For those who do not know the technical nuances, ROP is the key to a GPU’s ability to manage efficient rendering tasks. Losing even some can significantly hinder performance. According to the RTX 5080 tests, a similar deficit reached a yield loss of 11% on some securities. This shortens the appeal of these high-end GPUs: unparalleled performance. However, as Nvidia does not provide a direct replacement policy, customers always juggle with EU return laws and wait for them not to end with the short silicon straw.
In addition to the plot, the Dallas Micro Center in the United States was recently found in the focus after photos of shelves stacked with Asus RTX 5090 processors, particularly the liquid-cooled AFTRAL LC variant. But despite their availability, they collect dust. The reason? An astronomical price of $3,719, an incredible 85% on the Nvidia MSRP. While premium models are supposed to carry a recharge, even hard PC enthusiasts draw the line here. According to Reddit users and as an insignia for VideoCardz, this overprice turns what must be a highly coveted product into an unwanted shelf ornament.
What’s going on with the ROP-Gate GPU?
ROPs, or rendering output units, are not the most glamorous part of a GPU spectrum sheet, but are indispensable. They are responsible for the final rendering steps, where all their shaving, textured and pixel- pushing culminates in what you really see on the screen. When Nvidia is RTX 5090, 5080 and 5070 Ti cards started sending with less ROP than advertised, players noticed – and not only at reference points.
According to Alternate lists, three models are currently labelled B-stock, but curiously, one is sold as if it were fully functional, despite its ROP deficit. This ZOTAC SOLID OC RTX 5090 has only 168 ROP instead of 176. Similar defects are noted in RTX 5080 (104 instead of 112) and 5070 Ti (88 instead of 96). What is all the more worrying is that these problems were first scrambled or left unsupervised by Nvidia, leaving retailers safe from falling customer service.
What adds insult to injury is the same price. If you offer a product with less performance, logic suggests a price reduction – even a small one. On the other hand, customers are invited to pay the higher dollar for a GPU with invisible but real limitations. Although EU legislation allows for a return to a specific window, this does not help users outside the region or those who do not know that they have purchased an engaged unit until it is too late.
Why RTX 5090 at the Micro Center?
The RTX 5090 is not available anywhere. In a surprising turn, several Redditors reported that Micro Center in Dallas has corridors aligned with RTX 5090 maps. Good news, right? Not so fast. These are not your garden courtesy cards – these are the Asus ROG ASTRAL LC RTX 5090 OC Edition. As they reach $3,719, they almost double Nvidia’s MSRP base.
Now, yes, they are premium liquid cooling models with factory overclocks, but even Asus himself lists them for 3,409. The $300 mark at the Micro Center seems excessive even by enthusiastic standards. As Wccftech points out, price makes little sense when it considers that performance gains on basic models are minimal in most real scenarios. We are talking about marginal increases in the FPS that do not justify hundreds – let alone thousands – of additional costs.
This pricing dilemma suggests that the apparent abundance of stocks does not reflect a better supply, but rather a reduction in demand. Even the toughest PC players think twice before investing in the hardware that offers decreasing returns for astronomical prices.
Are prices finally starting to stabilize?
There could be a silver coating, at least for the patient. According to Tom’s Hardware and eBay’s added data by users in r / nvidia, the average selling price of RTX 5090 cards Founders Edition went from $6,000 in launch to about $4,000 in March. The first days were a wild west, with climbers asking up to $10,000 for the first reserves. But thanks to a more coherent supply and a reversal, prices have begun to find balance.
Curiously, the data analysis shows that in March, the standard price differential decreased to $145.60, compared to over $1,100 in previous months. This suggests that prices are ultimately adjusted, even if they are still higher than MSRP. Online trackers like Camelcamelcamel report that Amazon prices fell from $9,000 after the launch to about $5,000 today. This is progress, though slow and not yet sufficient for widespread adoption.
Could another factor cancel the prices? Overcoming high-end models. The system integrators were offered RTX 5090 cards at entry level for more than $3,000, and even AMD’s RX 9070 series faces similar price difficulties. When demand does not respond to artificially inflated supply, the market corrects – slowly, but surely.
RTX 5080 is it better to buy?
If you don’t target the moon, the RTX 5080 could be a smarter choice, if you can find it. According to a Reddit ticket mentioned by VideoCardz, Micro Center has a large stock of “normal” RTX 5080 cards. However, like their older brothers, these prizes are also well above the $999 MSRP. For example, Neregg recently registered the MSI Ventus 3X RTX 5080 at $1,360, 36% higher than the retailer.
Thus, while supply may improve, prices have not yet reached. However, increased availability is encouraging. As with most hardware launches, the best offers often come a few months later. For now, players may want to stay unless absolutely necessary – or be willing to pay for early adoption privilege.
What is Nvidia’s final game?
With all these complications – defective ROP configurations, limited direct support from Nvidia, aggressive brands – the most widespread concern is in Nvidia’s long-term strategy. As Tom’s Hardware said, there was no formal means for affected customers to change their dumped cards. On the other hand, the responsibility was discharged to retailers, some of whom chose to simply sell the cards anyway.
This lack of centralized replacement system may compromise the customer’s goodwill and brand integrity, especially among Nvidia’s most loyal fans. After all, these are not budget GPUs. These are halo products, often cost as much as an entire PC game. When you pay this kind of money, you expect not only maximum performance, but also premium support.
It is not known whether Nvidia underestimated demand or overestimated its supply chain capabilities. In any case, the result is clear: consumer confidence has been a success. And with AMD going into the high performance segment, Nvidia may not be able to cost the brand loyalty forever.
Until the price is stable and Nvidia provides more transparency on material issues such as ROP defects, the RTX 5090 will remain a precautionary account rather than a required purchase update. As always, smart players know that sometimes the best update is patience.
