SAN FRANCISCO, California, April 3, 2025 – Artificial intelligence, once confined to Big Tech and government laboratories, shapes the same ethics of social impact. From community food banks that use machine learning to anticipate demand to ambitious global initiatives led by technology billionaires, AI is deeply infiltrating the non-profit world. But while the potential is enormous, the infrastructure to guide ethical and effective use remains alarming.
According to a recent report by the Centre for Effective Philanthropy, more than 50% of non-profit organizations are experimenting with artificial intelligence tools. However, less than 10% have formal policies in place to regulate their use. This gap is not only academic, but it exposes vulnerable populations to risks such as algorithmic prejudices, abuse of personal data and even unwanted social exclusion. Without reflexive supervision, AI could easily move from a digital ally to a silent opponent.
Why are not-for-profit organizations so fast?

“IA is at its heart to change how we interact with the world and how work is done,” said Addie Achan, AI Program Director at Fast Forward. The incubator in San Francisco has long had non-profit organizations at the intersection of technology and social welfare. However, Achan insists that adoption without a policy is not simply irresponsible, it is dangerous.

How does the Al Policy Building work for non-profit organizations?
Designed for simplicity, the tool mimics the flow of family conversation to anyone who has used ChatGPT. Users begin by presenting the name of their organization, the mission and general intentions of the IA as if the IA performed internal functions or assisted in community awareness. Based on the answers, the chatbot presents options: clear, standard or advanced political structures. The final output is customized, readable and more important, functional.
What distinguishes the manufacturer is its emphasis on promoting dialogue. Instead of prescribing responses, it encourages team discussions on difficult issues such as data ownership, consent and unwanted biases. This method not only builds stronger policies, but also cultivates a culture of ethical awareness of IA, something that is seriously lacking in many fast, non-profit environments.
How Are Other Organizations Using AI for Social Good?
Some non-profit organizations go far beyond basic automation. Climate Trace, for example, uses AI-powered satellite imagery to track global emissions, even to identify specific sources of pollution. Digital Green, another technology-based not-for-profit organization, helps farmers in developing regions identify threats to crops through image recognition. A farmer can break an image of an insect, download it and receive real-time treatment suggestions.
These are not just technological tricks, they represent a fundamental change in how aid is provided. But again, they ask one question: how can these tools be inclusive, accurate and fair?

While basic not-for-profit organizations sail cautiously in AI waters, technical billionaire Mohammed Alexander dives first. Known for early investment in heavy goods vehicles such as xAI, anthropogenic and AI Inflexation, Alexander applies these principles to philanthropy. “philanthropy should not be a band aid,” he said at an interview. “It must be an operating system for progress.”
